MIT UF/MF SYSTEMS

MIT UF/MF

In the vast ecosystem of water and wastewater treatment, two technologies stand as silent sentinels—Ultrafiltration and Microfiltration. They don’t rely on chemicals or complex reactions. Instead, they use precision-engineered membranes to physically block contaminants, allowing only what’s clean and safe to pass through.

These processes are part of the membrane filtration family, which also includes nanofiltration and reverse osmosis. But UF and MF are the frontline defenders—handling the bulk of suspended solids, bacteria, and pathogens before water moves on to more intensive polishing.

How They Work

Both UF and MF operate on the principle of size exclusion. Water is pushed through membranes with microscopic pores:

  • Microfiltration (MF): Pore sizes range from 0.1 to 10 microns. It removes:
    • Suspended solids
    • Bacteria
    • Algae
    • Protozoa
  • Ultrafiltration (UF): Pore sizes range from 0.01 to 0.1 microns. It removes:
    • Viruses
    • Colloids
    • Proteins
    • Finer particulates

The smaller the pore, the more refined the filtration. UF goes deeper, capturing what MF lets through—but both are essential depending on the application.

Benefits:

  • Chemical-free filtration: No need for coagulants or disinfectants
  • Compact and modular: Easily scalable for small or large systems
  • Consistent quality: Stable output regardless of feed water variability
  • Energy-efficient: Especially MF, which operates at lower pressures
  • Low footprint: Ideal for urban or space-constrained facilities

Applications:

These technologies are used across a wide spectrum:

  • Municipal Water Treatment
    • MF for turbidity and pathogen removal
    • UF for virus and organic matter reduction
  • Wastewater Reuse
    • UF as a pretreatment for reverse osmosis in water reclamation
    • MF in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for biological sludge separation
  • Industrial Processes
    • Food & beverage sterilization
    • Pharmaceutical water purification
    • Cooling tower blowdown treatment
  • Desalination Pretreatment
    • UF protects downstream RO membranes from fouling
